The Story of Depth Recovery

Depth Recovery

Origins

In 2020 the world as a whole was taken by collective upheaval. The Covid-19 pandemic changed the way the world runs, how we act towards one another, and how we perceive everything. It is from this time where one phase has ended, and the next has yet to become in which Depth Recovery finds it origins.

Depth Recovery follows in the foot steps of James Hillman, founder of Archetypal Psychology, as well as C.G. Jung, founder of Analytical Psychology. In line with both thinkers, Depth Recovery believes in the meaningfulness of ones afflictions, the pursuit of seeing through our afflictions to the deeper archetypal level, and the on going process of soul-making. Our work follows the rebellious spirit of both thinkers, who through their own individuation left the confines of their beginnings, and forged pathways of their own.

The idea’s of Depth Recovery have been born out of personal experience, and struggle. After close to 7 years as a devoted member of the recovery community, I found myself at a loss. Curiosity had finally gotten me, and I began to question. Beliefs, practices, past experiences with sponsor’s or sponsee’s – I questioned everything. What followed over the course of the next 7 years was my true initiation, leading me away from traditional 12 – Step recovery, through the underworld, and towards an archetypal approach to recovery.

The Vision

What makes Depth Recovery stand out is that it see’s itself in a constant state of becoming. Our work is to free the recovery experience from rigidity, dogmatism, and a one size fits all story about ones addiction, recovery, or suffering. We seek to be a temenos for those in long term recovery, newly sober, or longing for meaning – to challenge the old mythos, and begin a journey towards the new stories of addiction, recovery, and healing.

Additionally, we seek to expand the understanding of recovery, and speak of it as restoring soul. In this light, our work is for all – not only those visited by addiction. We believe that recovery is the embodiment of eccentricity. It is the experience of returning to a state of uniqueness, of ones essence, and an increased ability to see beauty in our lives.

About the Founder

Corey Gamberg has long been sought out by people who find themselves fractured, alienated, or underserved by traditional recovery. He has worked with these individuals to rediscover themselves within a recovery context, and to dig far deeper than traditional recovery methods allow. Corey seeks to restore Soul to recovery. He has built a body of work upon the theories and practices he has uncovered on his own journey, and he has found this work to deeply resonate with others who have struggled to find or maintain authentic connections with themselves in traditional recovery spaces.

Much of Corey’s theory echoes the work of his spiritual forebears, chiefly Carl Jung and James Hillman. Driven by the fire in his heart sparked by these and other explorers of the psyche, Corey has obtained a Jungian Psychotherapy Program certification from the esteemed Jung Institute of Chicago, a Jungian Dreamwork Certification from The Haden Institute, and a Contemplative Spiritual Direction Certification from The Alcyon Center.

Corey has woven these studies into his long history of experience working in recovery. He has operated sober houses, worked roles in treatment centers ranging from RSS to Executive Director, and was a co-founder of the non-profit The Family Restored. Throughout the tapestry woven from these experiences, Corey has continually followed his own personal thread, and often draws from his own Soul work when working with clients on an individual or group basis, speaking at events, and hosting trainings.

Corey’s life work is to usher in a new era of meaningful recovery work, responding to the needs and drives of the individual and to the ever-changing nature of substances themselves. Colleagues and client alike have found his work to be profound, elegant, unique, and deeply meaningful.
